The Assessment for Estuarine Trophic Status (ASSETS) model can be applied by coastal managers, scientists and other interested parties. Please download the software from the link below. This site is being developed to include a registration area, which will allow you to upload data on your bay or estuary to the www.eutro.org website. This will be available at the end of 2009.
The ASSETS software has been developed by NOAA and IMAR, and works only with the MS-Windows operating system. ASSETS is designed to make it easy for a user to enter data for a coastal system, and automatically perform an assessment of trophic status. There are four data entry screens:
The data required for each component can be filled in any particular order, and saved at any time in order to be completed later. The figure below shows the screen for defining Pressure to the estuary, bay or coastal lagoon, known in ASSETS as Influencing Factors

NOAA and IMAR have made every effort to ensure that the ASSETS software will perform appropriately. However, NOAA and IMAR make no express or implied guarantees with respect to suitability of this software, and cannot accept any liability for its use. By clicking on the download link below, you acknowledge these terms of use.
Five versions of ASSETS are available, in English, Chinese, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. The authors are very grateful to Dr. Angel Borja for help with the Spanish version of the software, Dr. Camille Saurel for the French version, and Dr. Zhu Changbo for the Chinese version.

Once you have saved the installation file on your disk, double-click it and follow the installation instructions. One or more sample files will also be written to your disk, in the folder C:\ASSETS Data
Run ASSETS from the Start bar, as shown below:
You may redistribute the software free of charge, and are encouraged to do so. Resale is prohibited. If you find this software useful, or have any doubts or comments on application, you are welcome to contact Dr. Suzanne Bricker at NOAA or Prof. Joao G. Ferreira at IMAR.
Software update history and operational issues
| Date | Action/Issue | Changes/Comments |
| 2009.11.25 | Windows 7 and Windows Vista deployment | In order to run the ASSETS application successfully in Windows 7 and Windows Vista, the following technique must be used: 1. Right-click the assets.exe file, which will typically be located in the Program files\ASSETS folder, and select Properties; 2. In the Compatibility tab, choose either: (i) Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3, or (ii) Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 2. Close the dialog. 3. Run the application normally. The changes detailed above need only be done once, after the program is first installed. All file saving and loading should work fine. This compatibility issue has been identified by Microsoft for scores of different programs, throughout different versions of Windows, which is why the company needed to introduce the Compatibility feature. |
| 2009.08.27 | Updated all five language versions of ASSETS - if you downloaded ASSETS prior to this date, please download the new version in your language of choice, uninstall your old version and install this one. All your saved files will still load correctly. | Fixed a bug in the Future Outlook (FO) scores, which led to incorrect final scores for some FO combinations. Thanks to Catherine Thomson (Dept. Water, Perth) for spotting the error. |
| 2008.10.24 | Decimal separator | The ASSETS application should work normally when used with an Operating System (OS) which uses the comma as a decimal separator, e.g. for German, Italian or Spanish OS. When you enter numbers or make selections, you must navigate out of the appropriate box (i.e. click somewhere else) for the value to be validated, otherwise you may find that the number is not appropriately updated. If you experience any problems, please send an email to the authors. |
| 2008.08.18 | Updated all four language versions of ASSETS - if you downloaded ASSETS prior to this date, please download the new version in your language of choice, uninstall your old version and install this one. All your saved files will stillload correctly. | Fixed a typo in the salinity zones definition of the Overview screen. Tidal Freshwater Zone upper limit (= Mixing Zone lower limit) was wrongly indicated as 5 psu, and should be 0.5 psu. Calculation of the two zone areas, chlorophyll P90 and dissolved oxygen P10 data, and estimation of the other (heuristic) parameters for the <5 (tidal freshwater) and 5-25 (mixing) zones rather than the (correct) <0.5 and 0.5-25 zones, may have resulted in an incorrect assessment. This will not affect the Pressure, Response, or Seawater Zone state components, but can affect the other two zones and therefore change results (both for State and for the overall ASSETS grade). |
